Beyond High School Seminar
The Gamma Rho Omega Chapter Scholarship Committee's Beyond High School Seminar (BHSS) is an annual event that engages a combination of middle school and high school students in interactive and informative workshop sessions geared to them achieving an understanding of opportunities related to college as well as non-college advancement upon graduation. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the BHSS was a cooperative event with The BEST Academy of The Bethel Church for over ten years. Since COVID, the BHSS has been conducted virtually.
Participants engage in games with questions from the speakers and workshop leaders on topics such as:
Study Skills
Test-taking
Applying to College
Resume Writing
Time Management
Scholarship Exploration
Military Options
CPR/AED Training
Money Management
HBCUs

A major and well-received component of the seminar has been the college student panel from local and other colleges around the country to share their experiences and answer questions posed by the participants. For the last two years the I Am a Star Foundation founder, Betty Burney, has been instrumental by allowing students in her program to be involved in assisting by using their skills to reach BHSS participants.
